The Playground Buddies Toolkit
If you are setting up a playground peer support scheme in your school, then the Primary Playground Buddies Toolkit is just what you need.
As National Anti-Bullying Week approaches from 13th-17th November I am highlighting the value of playground buddies in schools to support the creation of a culture of kindness, empathy and cooperation.
Read more about it here:
Playground buddies are children who are selected and trained to support other children on the playground. They help to ensure peaceful and happy lunchtimes and playtimes through organising games, providing a listening ear and helping to identify children that may need some support.
The buddies develop skills of empathy, listening, leadership and teamwork.
The Primary Playground Buddies Toolkit includes:
- Advice on how to get started.
- Selecting children to be buddies.
- Ten succinct sessions for training pupils as buddies.
- Tips for keeping things going after the initial burst of enthusiasm.
- Template certificates.
- Assembly outlines.
- A host of other activities and games.
An evaluation of the impact of playground buddies in two Manchester primary schools found that 78% of children felt safer in the playground with buddies on duty.
“You could see it was starting to make a difference because the children realised they were role models … there are less incidents in the playground and the buddies say that there is less fighting.”
– Sam Williams, Deputy Head teacher, Ashbury Meadow Primary School
